Following up on the huge success of our GG22 Growing the Public Gardens Round, we’ve made some really cool updates to the round structure this time, optimizing for the modular conviction voting architecture of Gardens to propel the growth of OSS on Ethereum.

Funding this round will allow Gardens to deliver a large scale campaign that integrates our best learnings from the experiments we’ve been running in modular conviction voting. This round will help fuel the growth of OSS in web3, position 1Hive has a leader in public goods funding, and grow the Gardens ecosystem through adoption by projects and communities that are a great fit for the platform.

The Gitcoin Grants Garden :seedling: GG23 Community Round aims to serve as the most effective campaign in Conviction Voting to date, using learnings from early experiments on Gardens v2 and the strong context of the Gitcoin and Ethereum OSS ecosystems as guides for its success.

Our round will feature 5 separate conviction voting pools (2 funding and 3 signaling), each tailored for a specific category of growth and development of public goods funding. Gitcoin’s Mission and Vision Statements will serve as the North Star for our Round.

Type of Projects Funded

  • Ethereum open source software (OSS)
  • Pop-up Cities and Permanent Crypto Hubs
  • Token Ecosystems
  • Web3 Public Good providers
  • IRL Communities, Clubs, Activists, and Doers

Round History

This is the 2nd iteration of our community round. Our previous round in GG22 used QF to directly fund communities on Gardens that met setup and eligibility requirements.

The round was quite successful for a first effort, attracting $4.2k in donations from 500+ contributors for the round’s 29 qualified projects: GG22 Community Round Proposal - Growing the Public Gardens 🌱 - #8 by paul2 - 🌱 Gitcoin Grants - Gitcoin Governance

In this round we’ll shift our focus to leveraging the strengths of Conviction Voting for ecosystem signaling and growth, retiring the connection to Grants Stack QF. We’ll do this by setting up a community on the Gardens platform using $GTC as the governance token, where this round will be hosted.

    • Amount of funds requested is less than or equal to the amount of funds in the proposed Funding Pool.
  3. Proposal Creators in Funding Pool: Allo Integrations
    • Meet all criteria from #1
    • Have a working MVP of a decision-sourcing or capital allocation mechanism built on Allo Protocol, or built within the Allo Capital ecosystem.
    • Proposal clearly states the scope of work and deliverables, and proposal creators have communicated with the Core Contributors at Gardens on the viability of the integration.

Round Mechanism

We’ll be using Funding and Signaling Conviction Voting Pools on Gardens v2. For resources on conviction voting and Gardens v2 check out the Governance Pool Library and How to Grow using Gardens.

Our round is optimized for the strengths of Conviction Voting, which include:

  • continuous signaling (Pools can remain active and healthy for multiple rounds)
  • better governance stability / reduced noise with time-weighted support
  • protection from common forms of governance abuse with proposal disputability.
  • optimistic, secure, low friction governance with less voter fatigue and admin overhead.
  • improved collective intelligence with bottom-up governance from high context voters.

And for the strengths of Gardens v2, which include:

  • Open community participation tied to an enforceable Covenant
  • Modular governance pool setup
  • Fully transparent onchain governance

The Round will feature 5 governance pools in total: 2 funding pools and 3 signaling pools.

Funding Pools:

  1. Matching Funds for your Funding Pool - 50% of award funding - communities can request matching funding through this pool for funding pools they build in Gardens communities.
  2. Allo Integrations - 50% of award funding - request funding to integrate your Allo mechanism into Gardens v2.

Signaling Pools:

  1. Best OSS on Ethereum - curated list of best projects on Ethereum. If successful, this pool can be tied to funding in future rounds.
  2. Ecosystem priorities: identify most unhealthy or underserved public goods on Ethereum. Use results of this pool to direct funding in future rounds.
  3. Regens of Web3 - curated registry of the most valuable regens in the space. If successful, this pool can be tied to awards and/or sybil resistance in future rounds.

Impact & Intents

Our round aims to spur the growth of public goods, open source software, and shared wealth by tapping into the expertise of the Gitcoin community using a novel and tested mechanism for sourcing collective intelligence.

The goal of each funding pool is as follows:

  • Matching Funds for your Funding Pool
Enable communities to better support their own work by offering funding in a way that can be transparently tracked by anyone, but without taking away from the sovereignty of the community to allocate their own resources (since they will understand how to do this best)
  • Allo Integrations
Improve the interoperability of mechanisms in the Allo Capital ecosystem, and the capabilities of projects and communities on Gardens by making more of these allocation mechanisms available to users on the Gardens platform.

The goal of each signaling pool is as follows:

  • Best OSS on Ethereum
Source a curated list of the top tools and infrastructure on the Ethereum network in a way that’s decentralized, collaborative, and more likely to be accurate than other voting mechanisms.
  • Ecosystem Priorities
Identify problem areas in the Ethereum ecosystem so that future funding can be directed to address them.
  • Regens of Web3
Curate a list of values-aligned contributors in the Ethereum ecosystem in a way that’s decentralized, collaborative, and can be celebrated by the wider community.

Impact Assessment Plan

We’ll use the following metrics to measure Round impact:

  • number of active community members, amount of GTC staked, and proposals created in Gitcoin Grants Garden community.
  • number of active community members, amount of GTC staked, and proposals created in participating communities.
  • qualitative assessment of funding and signaling proposal outcomes, and direct interviews with participating members, proposal creators, and funded communities & projects.

Metrics will be measured using a Dune Dashboard, Gardens Platform metrics, and direct interviews made by our team.

Community Engagement

Our community engagement numbers by channel:

  • Gardens platform: 66 communities, 487 unique members, 5k+ transactions [source]
  • Social Media: 2.3k X followers, 130 in Discord server
  • GG22 Round participation: $4.2k donations from 514 unique donors [qf calculator]

In this round we aim to leverage existing Gardens momentum with OSS projects on Ethereum, pop-up cities & intentional IRL communities, and network chapter orgs by activating these communities in GG23.

We also aim to expand our reach to other organizations in these categories, plus in these new categories:

  • Capital allocation & mechanism design builders
  • Self-described “regens” and their regenerative web3 projects & communities
  • $GTC holders

Estimated Number of Grantees

Estimated # of eligible grantees by Funding Pool: 1. Matching Funds for your Funding Pool: 50-100 communities (including ~30 existing Gardens communities) 2. Allo Integrations: 5-10 projects

Anticipated Matching Pool

We expect to raise $10k for our matching pool from 1Hive through a DAO funding proposal.

Funds will be managed from a 2 of 4 Safe on Optimism, with Paul, Afo, Caue, and Sov as signers.

Safe address: 0xdc57B13819ad9dAe82789da117B512429e06A2B2

Stated Conflicts of Interest

Round operators, contributors, and advisors will refrain from supporting any proposals in the Round for projects & communities they represent, or in the case of the Regen pool, for proposals for themselves directly.

More Information

Without matching funds from Gitcoin we would likely structure a different campaign with 1Hive funding targeted towards a different North Star.
