Meme Channel starboard

Meme Channel starboard

Proposal Information

Proposal description:
Meme channels are some of the most spammed channels for large instances of SourceCred. I recently implemented a starboard-like interface for Shenangian Discord that I think would benefit 1hive as well.

It’s setup like this:

  1. Memes are posted to a meme channel
  2. After 24 hours, if that meme has not recieved a certain amount of :star:(set to 5 as default), the post is move to a separate channel that mints 0 Cred. /

I propose deprecating the current memes channel and setting the Cred to something very low (like 0.25), then allowing community members to repost their memes in the new memes channel that is filtered by the starboard.

Proposal Rationale
SourceCred isn’t quite ready for fast growing, large communities. But it will be soon. I believe dampening the bleed it causes is the best course of action as opposed to completely removing it. I think this sort of implementation is seen as positive by both community leaders and patrons and would be a welcome change in the 1hive Discord.

Expected duration or delivery date (if applicable):
I could have it done by next week.

hello (´ ∀ ` *)

sound good , however what about people who make group to react to each other to game the system .

making the meme 0 cred is good idea , but also could damage activity in discord since some of the peep cant do much to get cred .

so if we could find middle ground will be nice.

I think this idea is really good and will filter out those really quality memes.

I think we might solve this issue by setting the star default by 10. By doing this I think we can somehow also solve some cheating issue. Getting 10 star from same group of person we can easily spot those group of person who belong to the same group. I dont know if I explained it the way I want it to be. LOL

we are planning on setting the meme channel from 0.25x weight -> 0x this week. But maybe we can brainstorm some ideas like this and revisit later.

All the same. I’m proposing to deprecate the current memes channel and make a new one. Maybe we can keep memes alive this week if I finish this?

We could also do this in a weekly interval instead of daily. That way people don’t spam it the day before Cred distribution. I’d imagine this would be better for HNY because the token is fixed supply and is hurt more by inaccurate distributions.

I don’t know, I would rather do a weekly meme competition

@befitsandpiper had a good idea with asymptomatic cred system(which he actually built but never deployed live). That would counter users from constantly disliking posts in groups. I think this is a good start to start a filtering system based on quality but it does need some refining

I’d say this aproach and having a meme competition aren’t much diffferent

So, my personal opinion is skeptical towards asymptotic Cred. It’s actually the same problem I see with channel weights. Yes, bad posts aren’t scored as high, but the same goes for good posts. We WANT good posts to earn Cred. Punishing good actors is something I try to stay away from as much as possible. I believe this approach allows for memes to exist as they currently do, but only punishes the bad memes.

You also mention disliking posts. This is not available feature in SourceCred so its really just about deleting the bad Cred and keeping the good.

Dislking would be the non cred emojis we have set on the server which are i think :poop: , :-1: (mints 0 cred). As per the asymptomatic cred you could always create broader relationships between user accounts, therefore the users that are contributing have more leverage. I know that is a very hard metric to quantify but it could be a start into a automated filtering system

Even if they mint 0 Cred themselves, the edges have weights and mint some Cred. I wouldn’t say these are negative per se. Just non-influential.

I proposed something similar to Dandelion the other day actually. Basically grouping weights based on density, frequency, and uniqueness of reactions. He told me SourceCred is putting most of its efforts into releasing the Creditor, which would fix many of the problems we’re facing in both Shenanigan and 1Hive.

I know that is a very hard metric to quantify

Thats the main problem. This is another patchwork on top of the Cred Graph. It doesn’t intrinsically solve any problems. For now I propose to focus on fixing Cred from a community aspect, instead of a mathematical. Until the Creditor comes out.

FWIW Carl (our bot) has a starboard feature.

this is actually a reverse starboard, since starboard posts messages from a bot and therefore would interrupt Cred flow
